What Happens in a Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health Evaluation in Philadelphia?

3 min read

If you have ever left an appointment feeling rushed or unheard, walking into a new physical therapy clinic can feel like a risk. You may be wondering what will be asked, what will be assessed, and whether anyone will actually listen. Those concerns are valid, and you deserve to know what to expect before you book.

At Restore Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health, LLC, your first visit is a full, unhurried evaluation built around you. Here is what happens, step by step.

Before Your Evaluation: A Free Phone Consultation

Your experience starts before you ever step into a clinic. You can schedule a free phone consultation to talk through your concerns and confirm that our practice is the right fit. There is no pressure and no commitment.

This call also helps you choose the setting that works best for you. You can visit one of our clinic locations across the Philadelphia area, or book a mobile, at-home visit in Philadelphia, the Main Line, Montgomery County, or Delaware County. New moms are always welcome to bring their babies, so childcare does not need to be arranged.

Your Story Comes First

Your evaluation is a full 60 minutes, one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. There are no aides and no shared appointments. You will not be handed off or split between patients.

We begin by listening. Your therapist will ask about:

  • Your symptoms, when they started, and what makes them better or worse

  • Your medical history, including pregnancy, birth, and surgical history if relevant

  • How your symptoms affect sleep, work, exercise, and daily life

  • What you want to get back to, whether that is lifting your toddler, returning to running, or simply feeling comfortable in your body

Our therapists have specialized perinatal and postpartum expertise, including training alongside doulas. You can share what is really going on without worrying about being dismissed.

The Hands-On Assessment

Once we understand your story, we look at how your body is functioning. What we assess depends entirely on your needs, and you remain in control throughout.

Movement and Orthopedic Testing

Your therapist may use a functional movement assessment or movement screen to observe how you squat, bend, reach, walk, and balance. We evaluate strength, joint mobility, posture, and how your muscles work together. If running is part of your life, a running form assessment or running gait analysis can reveal where stress is accumulating and what may be driving your symptoms.

Manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue mobilization and joint mobility testing, may be used to identify areas of tension or restriction. We also assess your breathing patterns, since diaphragm function directly influences both core stability and pelvic floor health.

Pelvic Floor Assessment, Only With Your Consent

If you are dealing with pelvic pain, incontinence, painful intercourse, diastasis recti, or prolapse, your therapist may recommend assessing your pelvic floor. This can include pelvic floor internal techniques to evaluate muscle tension, strength, and coordination. The process is always explained in advance, it occurs only with your full consent, and you can pause or decline at any point.

How We Find the Root Cause

Every evaluation follows our Root. Rebalance. Restore. framework. Pain in one area often traces back to dysfunction elsewhere. Hip weakness, for example, can contribute to low back pain, and poor breathing mechanics can drive pelvic floor tension. Because Restore Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health, LLC integrates pelvic health, orthopedic physical therapy, sports physical therapy, and perinatal care, your therapist evaluates the whole picture rather than a single isolated symptom.

What You Leave With

Before your visit ends, your therapist will explain their findings in plain language. You will understand how your symptoms connect and what is most likely driving them. Together, you will set goals and build a plan that may include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, breathwork and diaphragmatic training, or neuromuscular re-education.

Many patients also leave with a few practical steps to begin at home. You do not have to wait until your next visit to start feeling more in control.
