Embracing Masculinity: Breaking the Stigma of Pelvic Floor Treatment for Men

Updated: Feb 6

When it comes to health and wellness, certain topics tend to be swept under the rug. One such area is men's pelvic health, an often overlooked aspect that can significantly impact overall well-being. Pelvic floor dysfunction is not exclusive to women and it's time to break the silence surrounding men's pelvic health.

A patient of mine, a young man, had pelvic floor dysfunction. He mentioned to me that he was referred to Restore Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health and immediately thought, “Do I have a pelvic floor dysfunction? I thought only pregnant women had pelvic floor dysfunction.” Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this from a male patient. Contrary to popular belief, pelvic floor dysfunction is not solely a women's health concern. Men can also experience a range of issues related to their pelvic floor, including urinary and/or fecal incontinence, erectile dysfunction, acute or chronic pelvic pain, and prostatitis. There’s a stigma attached to pelvic floor physical therapy that makes it “embarrassing” for men to commit to scheduling an appointment with a pelvic floor therapist.

At Restore Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health, we take a very holistic approach to treating men, considering the interconnectedness of the pelvic region with the rest of the body. This approach helps identify and address the root causes of dysfunction. Every individual is unique, and so are their pelvic health needs. We create a personalized treatment plan tailored to the specific concerns and goals of each patient standing in front of us. No two patients will get the same plan of care even if they have the same medical diagnosis. Many men are unaware of the role their pelvic floor plays in overall health. Some men even believe they don’t have a pelvic floor! We focus on empowering individuals to understand their bodies and actively participate in their recovery.

We also employ evidence-based techniques to improve muscle function, relieve pain, and enhance overall pelvic health.

Despite the prevalence of pelvic floor issues in men, the stigma surrounding these topics often prevents individuals from seeking help. It's crucial to emphasize that pelvic floor physical therapy is a safe and effective way to address these concerns. By seeking help, men can improve their overall quality of life by improving urinary control, sexual function, and/or overall well-being. Ignoring pelvic floor issues may lead to worsening symptoms and potential complications. Seeking help early can prevent further health issues. Dealing with pelvic health concerns can be challenging emotionally. At Restore, we will support and help individuals regain confidence and control over their bodies.

By breaking the silence and raising awareness about men’s pelvic health, we can empower man to take control of their health and improve their overall quality of life. Don’t let pelvic health be a taboo subject— seek help and take a step towards a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life!
